What does it mean to have great style? Does it mean wearing the latest trends or having a totally unique look? Fashion designer, Rachel Zoe said, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak." With this standard in mind, we’ve got a five-step guide to good style choices (that ANYONE can follow). Study this guide, and you’ll wake up feeling excited to get dressed and take on the day.
You can’t expect to make good clothes style choices without knowing what style you’re going for. Determine what styles inspire or intrigue you. Are you into the Parisian chic look, or do you prefer casual, athletic attire? Find examples of the styles you love, and use that as a reference.
Most of us have closets that are full of clothes we rarely wear. Cleaning your wardrobe can help you identify what you should keep and what you should throw out. Ask yourself these questions when determining whether or not to keep an item of clothing:
Many fashion designers develop a system to create the perfect outfit over and over again. You can do the same thing. Find a picture of an outfit you love and break it down. How many colours are there? Are there any interesting patterns or textures? Create a formula for yourself (example: 2 colours + 1 pattern + 1 neutral) and use it every time you get dressed.
No outfit is complete without some accessories! It doesn’t take a lot to add a little pizazz to your look. Sort through your jewellery, scarves, hats, and bags and see what you have and what you can add to your current collection.
This is the fun part. Now that you’ve identified your style, sorted through your closet, and developed an outfit formula, you can get creative. Experiment with your clothing choices. Try wearing a cocktail dress with a big, baggy top. Wear your faded blue jeans with a dressy blouse.
The truth is, there are really no rules when it comes to fashion. Try something crazy, because anything goes!
